Flexible 1:1 online education is a recipe for sporting success

How Wendover provides a flexible education for one tennis star

Online learning from Wendover is designed to allow students and their families time to pursue their interests alongside receiving a full-time education. Group lessons are often mornings-only, so work for many sporting families.

But if group lessons don’t quite fit the bill, Wendover has the solution – a personalised 1:1 online education that fits perfectly around your training and competitive commitments.

Bespoke one-to-one online flexible education

Freddy (Year 12 and from a tennis family) and his family agreed that he could prioritise his tennis career during his crucial GCSE year (Year 11), provided that we could work out a lesson timetable that would fit around tennis. So, our dedicated team here at Wendover did exactly that. Freddy and his family reduced the number of GCSEs to six, and by August Freddy had not only achieved six good grades but had also increased his ranking!

Personal, flexible lesson programme

We developed a lesson timetable that worked around tennis training, using evenings and weekends. There were no lessons when Freddy was travelling, but plenty when exams were approaching, including mock exams and formal assessments.

Wendover works hard to ensure that specialist teachers are available at the right times for the student, taking into account changing time zones. Freddy and his parents also had to be committed to the programme – which worked so well that Freddy is staying with us for his A-level studies, too.

Sharing educational and sporting success

Director of Teaching and Learning at Wendover, Jude Richardson, knows bespoke education can work brilliantly in such situations, provided there are great communications and an open relationship between the pupil, parents and Wendover.

“Freddy’s parents gave us as much information as possible about his likely schedule, and were quick to advise us when, for example, match wins meant that he would last another round in the tournament. Of course, it was also wonderful to share his successes with his friends and teachers!”
