Why do students choose to study GCSEs online?

Studying GCSEs online has huge benefits

Our students would grin and ask, “Why study GCSEs at a normal school!” With flexible lesson times, small or 1:1 classes, and a focus on personalised learning, Wendover Online School’s growing community of students and their parents are full of praise for online learning.

So, in this blog, we’ll ask why students choose to study GCSEs online with Wendover, and how this can benefit their whole family.

Flexible online learning

Wendover has reshaped education so that learning fits around the rest of life, rather than taking centre stage. We timetable lessons to take place in the mornings. Sometimes they are times to suit a personal schedule. So online pupils are freed to enjoy the rest of their life alongside a successful full-time education.

Studying GCSEs online has allowed our students to follow their dreams. Wendover online students have achieved international sporting success, found time to pursue horsemanship, ballet, tennis, football and music, all without compromising on their schoolwork.

“I know I would never have been able to follow my dream without such close help from my online teachers, and it was great to be able to take part in my football life at the same time as studying”. Iwo, GCSE student

Learn anywhere at your convenience

Online schooling also allows students living or travelling abroad to easily access a British education, studying for GCSEs through live lessons in their local time zone. We have students who log on to lessons from airports, from international tennis training, or even from family holidays: online schooling gives you access to lessons wherever you are.

Personalised online learning

We have small class sizes (3-5 pupils) for GCSE subjects. We offer one-to-one tuition in subjects where a student needs more personal attention or has particular constraints on their time.

This means that our expert teachers get to know their students individually, and can tailor lessons to their needs. If a student is struggling with one aspect of a subject, this is quickly picked up. If everyone is confident and familiar with another topic there is no need to linger.

“I know my pupils so well and really enjoy bringing their personal experiences and interests into lessons,” says Jude Richardson. “We find that students studying for GCSEs are much more involved in learning when we use ideas and examples they care about. It makes a rich learning environment for us all.”

Highly Focussed Lessons

By their very nature, small class sizes with a skilled online teacher quickly show results. Pupils can ask questions as they arise and receive a prompt and personal explanation. It is easy to build a shared understanding with solid foundations.

Our students say that small classes also minimise the distractions that come from larger classes. Even just a few extra people can disrupt or divert attention from the lesson.

Comfortable learning environment

Teenage years can be hard for even the most well-balanced pupil. Having to answer questions or give an opinion in a crowded classroom can be stressful. So Wendover’s small classes are, by contrast, a supportive and comfortable learning environment.

We match student groups carefully, and the teacher or tutor is always present. This ensures an atmosphere of support that encourages everyone to be involved. We are proud that this creates a nurturing environment. Even students who have been home schooled, or who have fled bricks-and-mortar schools, find they grow in confidence under our care.

GCSEs online are ideal for home schooled students

Studying GCSEs online is the ideal transition for those who have been home schooled but would like to re-enter a traditional school or college for A levels or further education; or for those who would simply like some expert support as they approach formal exams.

Around 86,000 students are home schooled successfully in the UK.  However, as students approach public exams for the first time, many parents feel that a more formal approach to learning with qualified and experienced teachers would be beneficial.

Online schooling is a perfect bridging solution for children who have not attended a traditional school. At Wendover we can offer lessons in selected subjects for a duration that works for the individual, as well as help with preparing for GCSE exams.

“Wendover really gave me the confidence and understanding to do my best”, says home-schooled Amelie, who joined us for just over a year to secure the GCSEs she needed for her chosen course.”

Building confidence for GCSEs

At the heart of Wendover online schooling is a belief that every student can shine provided they are give the right encouragement and support. Our online GCSE students have proven time and again that they can achieve far more than they or their previous schools expected once they gain the confidence that comes from small classes and a good relationship with their teachers.

Subject choice of GCSEs online

As an online school, we have the freedom to timetable the lessons that students need. So, if you want to study a mix of subjects that might not be possible in a regular school, ask if we can help.

Likewise, we don’t expect our students to take a set number of GCSEs. We offer flexibility and choice, as far as possible. We agree subjects with students and their parents then set a realistic timetable that sets them up to succeed. As a result, we have a large number of students and parents very proud of their success!

Further Education

Students living abroad who wish to pursue a British education at university may need to study GCSEs for admission to their course. Therefore, online GCSE courses at Wendover are an ideal way to gain GCSE qualifications without having to study at a British school. If you just want to brush up on one or two specific subjects to boost your results, we offer that, too.

Encouraging Independence

The benefits of online school remain through the rest of our students’ academic and work lives. Students progressing to A levels or university study can become unsettled when they are expected to start private study, or organise themselves. Taking part in online schooling at Wendover provides a smooth introduction into managing their own time and coming prepared to lessons. Even our youngest students quickly adapt under our careful guidance.
